What is the Breast Cancer Survival Rate?

You must accept the fact that not all patients who undergo breast cancer treatments are able to survive. It is but natural for you to want to know about the breast cancer survival rate before you decide to go for a particular treatment.

Survival rates differ and it would depend on the stage of the cancer you're currently in. What is this rate all about?

You can describe the survival rate in several ways such as:

What is the Breast Cancer Survival Rate?

1. Time - upon diagnosis, a patient is given 5-10 years to survive

2. Recurrence - there are times when recurrence take place after the cancer cells have been removed

3. Death risk as compared to other people with the same health condition

Survival rate is usually categorized based on the breast cancer stages. Stage '0' means that the cancer is still non-invasive. The cancerous cells can only be found in the walls of the lump or mass inside the breast.

When you reach Stage 1, the tumor has already grown about 2 cm long and it is already considered invasive. Stage 2A happens when the tumor is already 2 to 5 cm long.

The Stage 2B refers to tumors more or less 2 cm long but some of the auxiliary lymph nodes are already affected. When the tumor reaches above 5 cm and has already affected the lymph nodes, it is already classified as Stage 3A breast cancer; and when the tumor invades the skin of the breasts, the cancer is in Stage 3B. The advanced breast cancer is classified under Stage 4 wherein other organs of the body are already infected with the cancer cells.

The different stages can also be divided into the early stage (0 to 2A), the later stage (2B to 3A and B), and the advanced stage (stage 4). The treatment plan is generally based on the stage of the breast cancer.

Today, the survival rates for breast cancer are 86% (for the 5-year period after diagnosis) and 76% (for the 10-year period).

Breast cancer patients without metastatic has a rate of survival of 96% while those with metastatic has a rate of 21%. The percentage is based on the 5-year period after diagnosis.

There are also established survival rates for each stage of breast cancer within the 5-year period. The following are the rates: Stage 0 - 100%, Stage 1 is 100%, Stage 2A is 92%, Stage 2B is 81%, Stage 3A is 67%, Stage 3B is 54%, and Stage 4 is 20%.

As you can see, if you're still in the 0 and first stage, you have a 100% chance to recover from the disease. It is therefore very important to detect breast cancer during these stages. Besides, the medications used for the early stages are more affordable as compared to the medications or treatments given to the late stages.

Now, aside from the stages of breast cancer, the survival rate is also affected by other factors like lifestyle, exercise, psychological therapy, and smoking. Did you know that some breast cancer patients are able to live longer because they made changes in their lifestyle?

If you want to determine if you have breast cancer or if this disease runs in the family, it would be best to undergo a mammogram or you can also conduct self examinations. This is one way of discovering mass or lumps in your breast. The breast cancer survival rate is quite high but you'll need to detect the cancer at an early stage.

The Cure For Cancer - Hemp Oil

Nearly the entire world wants a cure for cancer, and it just so happens that such a cure exists. Unfortunately, because of the source of the cure, there has been widespread opposition and disbelief. Once the world comes to accept this medicine, humanity will enter a new age of peace and prosperity.

The cure for cancer is hemp oil, a concentrated extract derived from the cannabis plant. This modern formula, also known as cannabis extract medicine was created by a man named Rick Simpson, who initially made the oil as a way to get the medicinal benefit of cannabis without smoking the plant. It wasn't long before he realized that hemp oil was the ideal way that cannabis should be utilized.

Rick discovered the true power of the medicine after he was diagnosed with skin cancer in late 2002. While one part of the cancer was removed surgically, two parts remained. Rick remembered hearing a report that THC, the main ingredient in cannabis, killed cancer cells, so he put hemp oil on the cancerous sites, and in only four days, the skin cancer was gone. Since 1974, there have been dozens of studies showing that THC and other cannabinoids are effective in killing cancer cells and alleviating dozens of other conditions (and hemp oil has all these cannabinoids, but in concentrated form).

The Cure For Cancer - Hemp Oil

Naturally, Rick was amazed, and went to tell his doctor of how he cured himself. This was when the hard truth hit Rick; nobody wanted to listen to him. Both the receptionist and doctor were outraged at what Rick had to say, even though his news was very positive. In reality, a natural cure like hemp oil would put many doctors out of business, and too many people are afraid to lose the careers they have worked so hard for. It is terrible, but psychologically, it makes sense.

From 2003 to this day, Rick has provided people with hemp oil. Until 2006, he gave away large amounts of the oil for free, but had to stop after the RCMP (Canadian Federal police) confiscated his cannabis plants. Without cannabis, he could no longer give away hemp oil freely, so he was limited to helping people convert their own cannabis into the oil.

The healing powers of cannabis extracts do not stop at cancer. First and foremost, Rick has not come across any cancer that hemp oil could not cure. However, he has also not seen a disease that hemp oil couldn't cure. This includes cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis, MS, pain disorders, mental disorders, and more. It is more difficult to think of something that hemp oil cannot cure, and while there are probably a few diseases that the oil does not work on, Rick has not found one yet.

What makes Rick Simpson different from other "miracle cure" promoters? Admittedly, there have been many, and 99% of them have been frauds. Unlike every other person, Rick has not been involved with this for money. Rick gave away hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of hemp oil, and he doesn't even want money in the long run. All Rick wants to see is this medicine made available on a donation basis, or as cheaply as possible.

Rick has a huge amount of support, including doctors like Robert Melamede and cannabis activists like world-famous Jack Herer. To anyone that does not believe him, Rick suggests skeptics to make a small amount of oil and put it on a skin cancer. Anyone can do it and see it work right in front of them.

I personally have known Rick Simpson, unfortunately only via telephone since I do not live in Canada, for almost a year now, and he is truly an honest and legitimate man. I have talked to dozens of people involved with hemp oil, either distributors or patients, and I have never heard of an instance where it did not work. In some extremely severe cancer cases, hemp oil will not be effective because the body's internal organs will already have been destroyed by chemotherapy and radiation treatment, but even then, hemp oil can still possibly save the life.

Causes of High White Blood Cell Count

There are several possible causes for a high white blood cell count. This count is high when there are more disease-fighting cells in your body. The technical term for this condition is leukocytosis.

Different medical practices may have different limits by which they define high white blood cell count. A count of 10,500 leukocytes in one microliter of blood is widely accepted as a high count. The threshold may vary between sex and age.

White blood cells are categorized by five subtypes, and each type has a different activity in fighting disease. When you get the results of your white blood cell count, they will usually specify what the levels are of all the different types. Usually, a high count is only caused by an increase in one type of white blood cells.

Causes of High White Blood Cell Count

A high white blood cell count is indicative of an immune system problem that increases their production; a disease in your bone marrow that causes high blood cell production; a reaction to some drug that is used to enhance cell production; or the increase expected when your body is fighting off an infection.

There are some more specific reasons why your white blood cell count may be high:

Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a cancer that lives in the bone marrow and blood. This disease is a rapidly progressive one. Children are more affected by this than any other type of cancer, although adults can develop the disease as well.

Drugs like epinephrine and corticosteroids can affect your white cell count.

Measles is an infection that affects mainly the respiratory tract. It is very contagious. The signs include skin rash, fever, sore throat, inflamed eyes, runny nose and cough. The measles vaccine is an excellent way to protect children against this disease, but outside of the civilized countries, many children are not vaccinated. This disease will spread rapidly among people who have not had the vaccination.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a serious type of arthritis from which you will experience joint damage and pain. It attacks your joints' lining and this causes swelling. In turn, that leads to throbbing, aching pain and possibly eventual deformity. Rheumatoid arthritis, also called RA, can make even the easiest of normal activities hard to accomplish.

Some of the other causes of high white blood cell count include:

Stress, be it emotional or physical
Smoking
Tuberculosis
Tissue damage, like one receives with burns
Acute or chronic myelogenous leukemia
Chronic or acute lymphocytic leukemia
Whooping cough
Severe allergic reactions
Myelofibrosis
Polycythemia vera
Other viral infections
Other bacterial infections

Uterine Polyps Cancer Treatment

Nobody knows how common uterine polyps are. Some research suggest it occurs in 10% of women. Patients who go to their doctor complaining menstrual bleeding problems will usually be tested for the possibility of polyps.

Symptoms: Intermenstrual bleeding, excessive bleeding, spotting after intercourse.

Because most polyps are small, they usually do not cause any symptoms. Larger polyps will cause the symptoms mentioned above. If the polyps interfere with sperms or eggs, it might make it hard to get pregnant. Polyps may also cause a higher risk of miscarriage. This can be a thing condition to look out for in recurrent miscarriage cases.

Uterine Polyps Cancer Treatment

Multiple case reports indicate that tamoxifen treatment (breast cancer treatment) may stimulate the development and growth of endometrial polyps. The good news is, polyps are usually benign. Only very rarely (around 1%) are precancerous or cancerous.

Treatment

Polyps are normally removed surgically. Polyps can be removed by performing D & C ( Dilation and Cutterage), but the cutterage method may miss the polyps because this method is mainly performed buy feel. Newer development allow the polyps to be seen visually (Hysteroscopy). The use of a hysterescope allows polyps to be removed through the cervix visually.

Hysteroscopy using small tubes can be performed in the office, but larger tubes (used to remove large polyps or fibroids) usually require anesthesia in the hospital.

What do you do after surgery? What are the chances the polyps will recur? These are some of the issues that you need to prepare for even after treatment of uterine polyps.

What Causes Brain Cancer?

There is no known cause of brain cancer. Extensive research has been conducted to pinpoint a cause to help prevent the cancer from occurring. Although there has not been very much conclusive evidence leading to a cause of brain cancer, the one thing that doctors do know is that brain cancer is not contagious and it does not occur due to head injury. There are known instances where cancer has spread to the brain from other parts of the body.(Lung cancer,Breast cancer,Liver cancer and so on.)

Brain cancer can occur at any age. Studies have shown that two major age groups are affected. From ages 3 to 12 and 40 to 70 are the age groups when brain cancer is formed. Since researchers have been able to gather this data, it has led to the discovery of some risk factors. Workers in certain industries are at a higher risk for brain cancer than workers in other industries. These include, rubber manufacturing, drug manufacturing, and oil refining. Since brain cancer often occurs with members of the same family, heredity is believed to be another cause of brain cancer.

There are many different kinds of cells in the brain, each with a different function. Sometimes the cells inside the brain begin to grow uncontrollably leading to a tumor. A tumor in the brain may or may not be malignant. If benign a tumor stays where it starts, although it can grow very large and put pressure on crucial areas. In the case of a malignant brain tumor however this has the ability to spread and brain cancer occurs. Brain cancer is dangerous and life-threatening as the cancerous cells can interrupt vital brain functions. When brain cancer occurs, the cells continue to grow at a rapid pace. The cells and tissue around these cancerous cells become crowded out and invaded.

What Causes Brain Cancer?

Symptoms of brain cancer include headaches that are worse in the morning, changes in personality, abnormal eye movements, and weakness in the arms and legs. Seizures, nausea, and drowsiness are other symptoms of brain cancer.

Surgery is the treatment of choice for primary brain tumors radiation therapy, and chemotherapy are the treatments that are used when cancer has spread to the brain. The doctor will use one or a combination of these treatments depending on the needs of the patient.

Primary Peritoneal Cancer - Why Every Woman Needs to Know About This Disease Or Else

Primary Peritoneal Cancer is a rare form of cancer (also known as peritoneal adenocarcinoma) that originates in the peritoneum, a thin sheet of fine lines inside the abdomen and covers the uterus and extends over the bladder and rectum. The peritoneum is comprised of epithelial cells. By producing a lubricating fluid, peritoneum, this helps organs move smoothly in the pelvic cavity. Primary peritoneal cancer looks and behaves like ovarian cancer but the ovaries are minimally involved. Women who develop symptoms of ovarian cancer unfortunately will probably end up with primary peritoneal cancer.

Ovarian cancer is a disease in which malignant cells are found in the ovary. There are three types of ovarian tumors: epithelial cells, germ cells and the stromal cells. The cause of ovarian cancer is unknown but there are certain risk factors that indicate an increased likelihood of a woman in developing ovarian cancer metastasis. A risk factor is anything that may increase a person's chance of developing a disease. The following have been suggested as risk factors for ovarian cancer:

Early menstruation - starting periods at an early age usually before age 12 Late menopause (after 52 years of age) Hormone Replacement Therapy Infertility (inability to get pregnant) Having a first child after age 30 Personal history of breast cancer or colon cancer Family history of ovarian cancer Some fertility drugs Exposure to asbestos developing into mesothelioma tumor which affects the abdominal cavity.

Primary Peritoneal Cancer - Why Every Woman Needs to Know About This Disease Or Else

The diagnosis of primary peritoneal cancer consists of the following different exams:

Pelvic Exam Ultrasound Determination of CA-125 (a blood test to measure the level of CA-125. CA-125 is a protein also known as a Tumor marker that is often found in greater concentrations in the blood of women suffering from ovarian cancer or cancer peritoneal) Computed Tomography (CT) Lower GI or barium enema (a series of X-rays of the colon and rectum. The photographs were taken after the patient receives an enema with a white, chalky solution containing barium, the colon and rectum on x-ray, making tumors or other abnormal areas easier to see and detect) Biopsy

The treatment for Primary Peritoneal Cancer depends on several factors, including: the stage of the cancer, the extent of it and the patients overall health. The treatment is a combination of the following methods; surgery, intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy, supportive care (which is directed to the symptoms, including pain relief, weight loss and fluid in the abdomen, which can be removed during a procedure called abdominal paracentesis)

Finally we have the preventive measures suggested by physicians that include: a healthy diet (high in fruits, vegetables, grains and low in saturated fats), birth control pills, pregnancy and lactation and eventually if the person is presenting some symptoms of ovarian cancer the removal of the ovaries. Also studies have shown that certain genes are responsible for increasing the risk of ovarian and breast cancer. A routine inspection for gynaecological cancers can prevent or diagnose at an early stage the presence of tumors. Your doctor will eventually decide what treatments to carry out to help fight primary peritoneal cancer.

Early Symptoms of Breast Cancer - How to Detect Breast Cancer at Its Early Stage

Breast cancer is one of the top ten cancers plaguing women all over the world. The risk of getting this disease is higher as one becomes older. Unlike other cancers, however, detecting early symptoms of breast cancer is easier.

It's always important to arm yourself with the proper knowledge. To help protect yourself, be aware if you're experiencing any of these early symptoms of breast cancer:

1) Tenderness in the Breast

Early Symptoms of Breast Cancer - How to Detect Breast Cancer at Its Early Stage

While most women experience tenderness in the breast during their monthly cycle, it's not natural at all during the rest of her regular days. If you find yourself having to deal with this, perhaps it's time for a mammogram.

2) Unusual Lump in the Breast

One of the most common early symptoms of breast cancer is the presence of an unusual lump in the breast. Women have been taught to give themselves a self-breast exam, to feel for any bump inside the breast or even the armpit. This lump might be benign or malignant. However, it's not a good idea to take chances. Have it checked immediately.

3) Discharge from the Nipple

During the first few stages of breast cancer, you might notice a strange discharge from your nipple. This could either be bloody, yellow or greenish. Whatever color it might be, it is imperative that you go see a doctor at once. Breast cancer can progress very quickly; so the earlier you see a doctor, the better.

4) Swelling of the Breast

Similar to tenderness of the breast, this sort of thing might naturally occur in women during the days of her cycle. This is another reason why doctors encourage the practice of a monthly self-breast exam. This way, you will be able to see just how much of a difference there is in your breast size, and get a check-up immediately if you notice any of the early symptoms of breast cancer.

5) Change in Texture

Doing monthly self exams also help you determine any change in your breast's texture. Be on the lookout for skin that has redness or skin that is dimpling. Be very sensitive to retraction of the nipple or the occurrence of a peau'd orange. A peau'd orange refers to a breast that resembles the skin of an orange.

When there is something wrong, your body will tell you in the form of symptoms. So don't take these early symptoms of breast cancer for granted. Remember, your health is at stake here. Prevention is better than cure.

The Spread of Lung Cancer to the Adrenal Glands

When the cancer is diagnosed, up to one-fourth of all people with lung cancer may have no symptoms. These cancers typically are identified incidentally when a chest x-ray is made for another reason.

Lung cancer can either spread locally and involve nearby tissues, for example the cavity outside the lungs, layers around the heart, or may travel to distant locations like local lymph glands or the bones, liver, brain or the opposite lung. Other organs where cancer of lung tends to spread are the adrenal glands, which are the glands placed above the kidneys and which generate special hormones.

The most general tumor of the adrenal gland is in fact a benign tumor called an adrenal adenoma. In a good number of patients, these benign tumors never lead to a patient to have any symptoms and do not require to be treated. They are typically found when a patient has a CT (or CAT) scan of the body for an unconnected reason, and are hence sometimes called "incidentalomas".

The Spread of Lung Cancer to the Adrenal Glands

The most general malignant tumors located in the adrenal gland are tumors that originate from cancer cells that have metastasized from other areas of the body to the adrenal gland by means of the blood stream. Some different kinds of cancer may spread to the glands of adrenal, most usually melanomas, lung cancers, and breast cancers.

In short, If cancerous cells break away from the original tumor, travel, and develop within other body parts-like the brain, liver, the opposite lung, bone, adrenal glands, or lymph nodes of the chest or collarbone (clavicle) regions-the process is recognized as metastasis.

Symptoms of metastatic lung tumors rely on the location and size. About 30%-40% of people with cancer of lung have a number of symptoms or signs of metastatic disease. Metastatic lung cancer in the glands usually causes no symptoms by the time of diagnosis as well.

Future Treatments for Breast Cancer

Standard treatment for breast cancer has greatly improved survival for women, but the fact remains that 40% of women still ultimately die from the disease. This fact highlights theneed for new and better therapies. Traditional anticancer therapies mostly consist of drugs and ionizing radiation that damage DNA and DNA machinery. Such treatments preferentially kill certain kinds of cancer cells because these cells have a diminished ability to survive the damage. However, normal cells, can suffer DNA damage, but have the ability to repair their DNA. Unfortunately, the same genetic defects may render some cancer cells resistant to treatment, since they may also be less adept at activating cell death in the face of DNA damage. The challenge of cancer treatment now is to take advantage of properties of cancer cells that distinguish them from normal cells and to subsequently and specifically target cancer cells. A growing understanding of cancer cell biology is leading to better methods for treating the disease by directly exterminating only cancer cells. Listed are some of the latest new and adventurous strategies that are being developed for future breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Six new breast cancer treatment strategies

1. Oncolytic viral therapy - takes advantage of molecules that tumor cells lack. Tumor cells usually lack the protein p53 which controls the cell cycle and cell replication. Viruses can attach to a host cell and replicate continuously inside the cell. They then burst out when their numbers are sufficient, killing the cell and infecting its neighbors. An adenovirus has now been constructed that lacks the gene for the p53 protein; this virus can therefore only replicate in cells in which p53 is already inactivated-including many types of cancer cells. If this modified adenovirus is injected into a tumor, it will replicate in and kill only the cancer cells that lack p53, leaving normal cells unharmed. This strategy is presently undergoing clinical trials.

Future Treatments for Breast Cancer

2. Interventional Radiology - Scientists are investigating a technique in which magnets are used to pull chemotherapy drugs into tumors. Microscopic magnetic particles are attached to the cancer drugs and infused into the blood vessel that feeds the tumor. A rare earth magnet is positioned directly above the tumor site. The magnet pulls the drug-carrying particles out of the blood vessel directly into the tumor. This technique is still experimental; however, early research is promising. Scientists hope that it will bolster the effects of chemotherapy and avoid drug side effects.

3. Gene Therapy - involves the alteration of the patient's genetic material to fight or prevent cancer. Although the science of gene therapy is still in the experimental stages, researchers hope that in the future the therapy can be used as follows:

Alter the cells of a patient's natural immune system with cancer-fighting genes that allow cells to more forcefully attack the cancer; Genetically alter cancer cells so that the patient's own immune system will defend against them and allow the altered cancer cells to act as a cancer vaccine; Replace genes responsible for cancer growth with "good" genes; and inject a tumor with genes that will make it more susceptible to cancer-fighting agents. Make normal tissue resistant to chemotherapy, so that drugs will destroy tumors without damaging healthy tissue.

4. Breast Cancer vaccines - Vaccination strategies are being developed that engage the patient's own immune system to eradicate cancer cells. The advantage of this is low toxicity, and high specificity as well as a sustained antibody effect due to cell memory.

5. Use of breast cancer resistance genes - Researchers at the Dana Faber Cancer Institute have found a gene that can predict a high risk of cancer recurrence in some breast cancers that have been treated with chemotherapy drugs. This finding could guide the physician in the choice of anti-tumor drugs to use and eliminate wrong ineffective choices.

6. More precise breast cancer diagnosis - Breast cancer can now be characterized at a molecular level by obtaining expression profiles for thousands of genes within the cancer. These profiles can be grouped into subclasses of breast cancers that share common features such as prognosis and probable response to certain treatments. More precise treatments can then be made for each subclass of cancer

Lymph Nodes Cancer

Lymph node cancer or lymphoma is a cancer that accounts for approximately five percent of all cancers. It predominantly effects males but is not exclusive to men. Those most at risk are between the ages of fifteen and thirty four and those over the age of fifty-four. This does not mean that anyone outside of this age range is not at risk but statistically it does seem to fall inside those age groups at a greater rate. Like all other cancers, early detection and treatment is the key to a greater chance of recovery.

Hodgkins Disease is a form of lymph node cancer but is rare in its occurrence. It also statistically effects mostly men between the ages of fifteen and thirty-four and men over the age of fifty-four but is not exclusive to men only. Some of the most common symptoms of Hodgkins Disease are night sweats, unexplained wight loss, constant fatigue and unexplained fever. If you are experiencing any or all of these symptoms it is wise to have yourself examined by a doctor as these also could be the symptoms of another disorder.

All other remaining types of lymph node cancer are known as non-Hodgkins lymphoma. The majority of lymph node cancers treated are of the non-Hodgkins type. The symptoms of non-Hodgkins lymphoma are the same as Hodgkins Disease. Night sweats, unexplained fever, chronic fatigue and unexplained weight loss.Lymph node cancer is also known as lymphatic cancer. Those with a family history of lymph node cancer statistically fall within a higher risk group of contracting the disease. This is true for both men and women.

Lymph Nodes Cancer
