Lymphatic Massage - The Benefits

Lymphatic massage or lymph drainage massage is a technique used to help increase lymph flow.
Increased lymph flow removes harmful substances from the tissues and increases immune function.

Lymphatic massage can be useful in cases of edema, sports injury or for people experiencing a sluggish immune system or those suffering from a lack of energy.

Breast Cancer

What is the Lymphatic System?

Lymphatic Massage - The Benefits

The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in your body's ability heal from injury and ward off disease.
It is essential to the body's drainage system for cleansing and filtering out toxins and bacteria.

Problems With The Lymphatic System

Aches, pains, soreness and flu like symptoms could all be caused by congested lymph pathways.

The Benefits of Lymphatic Massage

Lymphatic massage can help to unblock the lymph system by manually cleansing the lymph system in a clockwise fashion.

Performing lymphatic massage correctly can stimulate the opening of the initial lymphatic and increase the volume of lymph flow by as much as 20 times.

Because lymph cleanses nearly every cell in your body the negative effects of chronic lymph blockages include but are not limited to:

o Frequent cold and flu infections

o Joint pain

o Headache and migraine

o Menstrual cramps

o Arthritis

o Loss of appetite

o Fatigue

o Mood irregularities

o Depression

o Acne

o Cellulite

What is Lymphatic Massage?

The use of massage as a healing therapy dates back centuries.
Lymphatic massage was developed in the 1930s and is a delicate form of massage that stimulates the body's lymphatic system.

The lymphatic system has no central pump and depends on muscle contraction through deep breathing, exercise and manual manipulation to move fluid.

Lymphatic massage utilizes a very light pressure combined with soft pumping movements in the direction of the lymph nodes. Immune system function can be significantly increased, improving metabolism and helping the body to eliminate waste and toxins.

A strong immune system makes you feel balanced, happy and whole.

As with most massage, it is vital to drink lots of water after a lymphatic massage to flush away toxins that have been released.

Lymphatic Massage - What can it be used for?

Lymphatic massage has been used for years to enhance the quality of the skin.

o Lymphatic massage aids the increase of lymph flow. When the lymph is flowing as it should, cells are bathed in fresh fluid making the skin look fresh and alive.

Lymphatic massage is also useful for people with sports injuries.

o When applied after neuromuscular massage, lymphatic massage helps to clear the tissue of debris and reduce the minor edema that can occur after deep tissue massage.

o Repeated lymphatic massage whilst healing from a sports injury can help to enhance the tissue regeneration process by keeping the tissue as healthy as possible.

It is thought that lymphatic massage can also help the scarring process by enhancing circulation and immunity.

o Increased lymph flow around the scar stimulates damaged lymph vessels to heal.

o Increased lymph flow draws away toxins improving the health of the tissues.

Another common use of lymph drainage massage is in breast cancer cases.

o Women who have had axillary lymph nodes removed sometimes develop edema in their arm. As long as there is only minor swelling, then a massage therapist with a good knowledge of contraindication and some specific techniques can do a great amount of good.

Lymphatic Massage - Is it Safe?

For the most part lymphatic massage is safe. However as with all massage therapies there are some contra indications. For lymphatic massage specifically, these include acute inflammation, malignant tumors, thrombosis and major heart problems.

To get the best results from a lymphatic massage, seek out a suitably trained and qualified therapist.

Breast Cancer Survival Rate - Stage 4 Breast Cancer

The breast cancer survival rate for Stage 4 breast cancer is much lower than for breast cancer detected at earlier stages.

Stage 4 breast cancer, or advanced breast cancer, has metastasized to other tissue including bone tissue, lung tissue, or the liver. When breast cancer has overwhelmed the body's natural defenses and spread this far by the time the cancer is first diagnosed, the 5-year survival rate drops to 16%-20% in the United States (American Cancer Society).

Breast Cancer

Up to 5% of white women in the U.S., and up to 9% of black women have advanced breast cancer spread to distant tissue at the time of first diagnosis (SEER). This difference is usually attributed to poverty and lack of health insurance.

Breast Cancer Survival Rate - Stage 4 Breast Cancer

In general, women who have advanced breast cancer at the time of diagnosis live approximately 18 months after diagnosis (median survival rate). Those who are still alive five years after their diagnosis of advanced breast cancer can live an additional 3.5 years (median survival rate) according to the American Cancer Society.

Since this is the most deadly category of breast cancer, it is important to work closely with all the health care providers. New treatments are being developed all the time, and second, or even third opinions may give the patient more information about newly discovered successful solutions.

Early detection is clearly the most important factor in breast cancer survival rates. Breast cancer detected at Stage 1 while it is still localized to the breast has a survival rate of 98%-100%, while metastasized breast cancer first detected at Stage 4 drops down to 16%-20%.

Early detection procedures must include monthly self-examinations done at the same time each month. From age 20-40, healthy women should have clinical breast exams performed by their health care providers every three years. After age 40, the breast exams should be annually and should include a mammogram or similar procedure.

North American white women have the highest rates of breast cancer in the world, but the 5-year survival rate for all stages (Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, and Stage 4) combined is 88% for the U.S. A recent study found European countries have lower 5-year breast cancer survival rates, with England at 77.8% and Ireland at 76.2% (Lancet Oncology).

The difference in these survival rates is usually attributed to life-saving early detection.

Raw Cacao: The Cultural Craze, Part 2: A History of Healing

A Little bit O' Chocolate Her-Story
First, either Nature, or God, or some sort of Nature God; or perhaps we could say the Unified Field of Evolutionary Intelligence, creates Cacao.

Cacao first emerges in the rainforests of Central and South America, though the history of its early spread is.not exactly known. And no one knows whether the bean or the tree came first, or what the exact role of indigenous people was in its natural selection process.

But the Incans, Mayans, Aztecs, and possibly even the Olmecs all had a close relationship with the Cacao bean on a number of levels: ecological, spiritual, economic, etc..

It's well known by now that when first the Spanish explorers arrived in Central America, they discovered the Cacao bean to be the primary currency in the Aztec kingdom!

Aztec emperor Montezuma literally had vaults full of Cacao beans. He paid everyone in his kingdom, not in paper president money, but in actual bean food form. Can you imagine? 3 beans for an egg, or 30 for a chicken? Not only that, but emperor Montezuma was supposedly the original Chocolate addict, consuming untold amounts of chocolately beverage all the live long day. Not to sound irreverent of course, the guy just liked his chocolate. I understand!

So it was the Spanish who first came in contact with the bitter cacao beverage, eventually importing it to well-to-do European culture, who imbibed the drink with sugar or honey. It wasn't until the mid-1800's that processing methods allowed the distribution of cocoa powder and the modern chocolate bar to be a widespread phenomenon. & it was only a matter of time before chocolate became as recognizable a food to the modern Westerner as soda, pizza, or the burrito. We will learn a little more about the Her-Story of Cacao in the following sections.

ChocoMytholgy: The Tasty Nature Avatar

If you're like me & believe everything in the Universe has a little angel companion (a core, energetic intelligence), a deity or deva, if you will, then would you think that the chocolate deity or deva is more of a feminine energy or masculine energy? I've often discussed this point with friends, because it is difficult to attempt to pin chocolate down as male or female (again, I'm talking about energetics here, not Sex or Gender). On the one hand, the fruit appears phallic (though I've also heard the fruits described as the breasts of a nature goddess, so this is definitely a matter of perspective), & needs a tropical, solar environment to thrive, cacao growing only 20 degrees north or south of the equator.

Additionally, various properties of the bean give it a brain boosting/psychoactive quality, as well as the tendency to stimulate, which we could definitely think of as yang, masculine properties. On the other hand, cacao trees do in fact grow best with ample jungle shade, and they are certainly delicate and particular about their environment. Chocolate is perhaps most well known for its ability to elevate our mood and open the heart, things we would associate with our more emotional, feminine part of ourselves.

My buddy Sirius is a major chocolatier, and has contemplated the same conundrum, as have Cassidy, Jessalynn, and other notable chocolatier friends of mine. The answer I've received again and again relates both to the cosmological beginnings of Cacao, the Mythological stories that accompany the Cacao Spirit, and how Cacao is actually practically relating to the World today in very visible ways. Cacao embodies both masculine and feminine qualities, so it needn't be seen as primarily one or the other. It's both for a reason!

Firstly, if we look at the genetics of the bean, it's very easy to see it's one of the most complex, unique, and powerful foods on the planet. It holds a lot of really potent information. Secondly, if we look at the Mayan creation stories involving Cacao (cosmological stories), it is said that one of the main ingredients in creating humans was Cacao, which leads me to think of it as having Universal qualities for both male and female human existence. Many Central and South American indigenous legends speak of Cacao as playing a role of balance, a role of harmonizing. The most recognizable theme across All the Cacao stories is that of the Cacao spirit coming in full force to restore mankind's balance with Nature, to bring harmony to our relationship with ourselves and the Earth. When we need to be reminded of our Nature connection most, Cacao comes to the rescue!

And so it is now on the planet, a time when we need to be continually reminded of our relationships with ourselves, each other, and the Earth. And so it is that Cacao is such the craze these days, especially amongst the growing ranks of cultural creatives and various evolutionary beings. It's ability to balance and harmonize all things is apparent on so many levels: Economy with Ecology; Science with Art; Nutrition with Fun; Grounded embodiment with uplifted Awareness. The Cacao spirit does not bring the Black or the White of the Yin/Yang, but rather brings the two into balance. Therefore we could think of the Cacao Deva is having a spirit akin to an Avatar.

Generally speaking, the word Avatar refers to an incarnation of Deity or Spirit. Messiahs come to Earth to redeem the souls of human beings, to save souls. Whereas Avatars specifically come to the planet to bring balance. There is not as much frame of reference in Western world-views for the Avatar energy, though it is definitely prominent in Eastern awareness. So I submit to you this: The Cacao Deva embodies many qualities, both feminine and masculine, and is here to help us come into balance on all levels, inwardly and outwardly. The Tasty Nature Avatar! We'll look a little closer at the practicalities of the Ecological harmony that Cacao offers us in part 3 of the Raw Cacao Cultural Craze.
